SWEET BRATS

Here they come, Josette Baïz and her swarm of kids, on the wings od a refreshing breeze that jostles conventions. With her young performers aged 9 to 19, the Aix-en Provence based choreographer asserts a unique artistic manifesto which she has been refining for twenty years. It begang in 1989 when Baïz started dance workshops with children from the Northern suburbs of Aix-en-Provence and Marseilles. The kids have North-African, Asian or South-American origins. The scheme was to last one year. Yesterday’s brats have become the pillars of the professional company Grenade, some of them teachers of the young newcomers. Baïz’s style meshes the children’s original dances from hip-hop to flamenco via Cambodian dancing. For a very special evening on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of this artistic and human adventure, Baïz asked emblematic choreographers, namely Philippe Decouflé, Jean-Claude Gallotta, Angelin Preljocaj, Jean-Christophe Maillot, Jérôme Bel and Michel Kelemenis, to pass on extracts from one of their pieces either to the wee ones or to the teenagers, or even to the whole group of twenty-three youngsters.
