SPACE CURVED BY FLAMENCO
A great renewer of flamenco, Israel Galván was not without predecessors. One could even say that all his art retains the memory of Vicente Escudero (1892-1980), whom he nonetheless only knew from a few scraps of films (including a hieratic apparition in Con el viento solano [With the Sunnny Wind] in 1966), and two basic treatises written in 1947 and 1957. But absolutely nothing remains of a "cubist" show Vicente Escudero may have performed in a small Parisian theatre, La Courbe, in 1924… This sole indication and the imagination it aroused were nevertheless enough for Israel Galván and his very inspired dramatist Pedro G. Romero to go back in time and, even better, to attempt a new experience in the present which master Escudero would doubtlessly not have disowned. In the wake of Tabula rasa, an extraordinary piano-voice-dance (in that order) trio, La curva takes on board for its voyage singer Inés Bacán, Bobote at the compás (rhythm) and pianist Sylvie Courvoisier, an important figure in experimental jazz. Can space be curved by flamenco? With Israel Galván, anything can happen …
