HOT AND COLD
Switzerland is not content with exporting the accuracy of its clocks; the country bestows upon us quite a number of eccentrics. Christoph Marthaler is at the top of the list.

Whether he stages operas or invests Avignon’s Main Courtyard with tourist and a washing machine (for Paperlapap at the 2010 festival), Christoph Marthaler, himself a musician, is in constant need of music in all its diversity. Besides he is rarely where one would expect to find him. So Greenland is his present scene. Ergo the title + ou – zero, below zero as for the temperature. Right now, this is the only unquestionable truth. Yet if ever, with global warming Greenland ice melted, the whole planet would be submerged. This why Marthaler and his ream set off to spend seven weeks exploring extensively that island crucial for our future, questioning its inhabitants, all of them hunters or fishermen with a perfect knowledge of both land and sea. It was a most uncommon creative quest and will besides have been the first international production shown in Greenland. Marthaler’s usual team, joined by two actresses of Greenlandic origins, were deeply moved by that experience.
