The Takács Quartet are particularly faithful and come back once again to the Théâtre de la Ville, with their little area of Eastern Europe in their luggage. The Mitteleuropa School – of which the quartet is a distinguished representative– was born and developed with in close relationship with its geographic repertoire, more so probably than the Western or Russian schools . The father of the quartet form himself, the great Joseph Haydn, merrily drew on the colours and rhythms of Hungarian music. Besides, his opus 71 collection, of which the Takács Quartet will perform the first of the six numbers, is dedicated to the Hungarian count Anton Georg Apponyi. As for the Bohemian Bedrich Smetana, he was the first to include elements of the Czech folklore in his music – thus foreshadowing the work of the great Béla Bartók, another Hungarian, who revolutionized quartet composing in the 20th century.
