A SALUTE TO OLD AGE This the story of a lonely old actor who hates his trade and the world at large, yet will part with nothing, least of all his wish to live.
An old actor, in his old flat, spitefully mulls over his past, the days when he played Richard III, a role that he always thought he was predestined for. He lives in absolute seclusion. His sole link with the outside world is the young girls who regularly brings him milk… Thomas Bernhard’s saturnine irony is obviously at work in this play written for the legendary Bernhard Minetti who created it in 1986. And then in Claus Peymann’s revival, with a simple, almost realistic setting Gert Voss gives his character a touch of brittle humanity, the sparkling allure of the old flaunter who never gave up his need to seduce, to dream, to hope for the impossible. Claus Peymann is famous for his defence of Thomas Bernhard’s works; as director of the Burgtheater in Vienna, he strived to have him recognized and understood in spite of raging polemic and censorship. Bernhard is now renowned the world over and Peymann still faithfully includes his plays in the programmes of the Berliner Ensemble, which he has been managing since 1999.
