Born in 1951 near Zürich, he studied music before attending Jacques Lecoq’s drama school in Paris and then was hired as a musician in Zürich. From 1989 onwards he has been awarded a wealth of prizes, mainly in Germany or in Salzburg and Vienna (Wiener Festwochen) as well as in Switzerland. He came to Paris for the first time in 1995 with Murx den Europäer [Murx the European]. Since then he has been a regular guest of the Festival d’Automne with, for example Stunde Null [Hour Zero] or Die Schöne Müllerin . He has directed productions at the Théâtre de l’Europe (As You Like It, Danton’s Death) and at the Garnier and Bastille opera houses (Traviata, Wozzeck). From 2000 to 2004 he was director of the Zürich Schauspielhaus. Along with Olivier Cadiot he was associate artist at the 2010 Avignon. Festival.
