Biography
He came to Paris in 1983/84, with Kleist’s La Bataille d’Arminius at the Odéon Théâtre de l’Europe. He was then manager of the Bochum Theatre after having headed that of Stuttgart. In 1987 he was appointed at the Burgtheater in Vienna, where he successfully fought for Thomas Bernhard’s dramatic works in spite of fierce controversy. In 1999 he was qppointed head of the Berliner Ensemble, where he staged Richard II, presented at the Théâtre de la Ville in 2010. Of course he keeps producing Bernhard’s works, among which Simplement compliqué [Simply Complicated].
