Born in 1929, he died in 1995. A poet and path breaker, he grew up under the Nazi regime and lived in the DDR. At first he tried to develop Bertolt Brecht’s approach to drama, but he later broke loose as he playfully juggled with the freer forms he had spotted in his “other spaces”: the United States where he resided in 1975-76, Bulgaria where he regularly stayed and France, where his work reached international fame. The resulting dramatic opus, joins Brecht’s, Beckett’s and Genet’s, to form a constellation of plays emblematic of the 20th century.
