Biography

Artistic director of the Sovremennik Theatre in Moscow from 1970 to 1985, then of the Yermolova Theatre, also in Moscow, until 1991, he went on to found and manage the Meyerhold Centre. In 2003, he became artistic director of the old Russian national theatre –  the Alexandrinsky – founded in 1756. He travels a lot, notably to Japan, Finland, Bulgaria and Germany. He also works as a teacher in Tokyo, at the Higher State Theatre School in Poland, and at the Moscow Higher Courses Institute for Film Writers and Directors in.
