Éveiller les consciences est l’un des objectifs majeurs des spectacles de Robyn Orlin. Après avoir récemment chorégraphié pour le Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris, elle retrouve son humour décapant et sa ville d’origine, Johannesburg, pour traiter des graves sujets qui la préoccupent. Cette fois, c’est en rendant hommage à un groupe social particulier, les Swankas, qu’elle entreprend d’interroger l’histoire de son pays et son actualité. Tous les samedis soir, ces ouvriers zoulous se métamorphosent en top models et défilent devant un jury. Né aux débuts de l’apartheid, le phénomène est devenu un “rituel underground” de l’Afrique du Sud d’aujourd’hui. Une véritable pratique culturelle qui fait de l’élégance un style de vie autant qu’un facteur d’identité, que la chorégraphe met en scène avec cinq Swankas et quatre danseurs et comédiens de ses précédentes pièces. One of the main purposes of Robyn Orlin's shows is to awaken consciousness. After choreographing for the Paris Opera Ballet recently, she is going back to her scathing humour and to her native city of Johannesburg, to tackle the serious issues that she is preoccupied with. This time she sets about to question her country's history and current affairs by singling out a particular social group, the Swankas. Every Saturday night these Zulu workers turn into top models and engage in a fashion parade in front of a jury. This phenomenon appeared at the beginning of apartheid and has now become an “underground ritual” of today's South Africa. It is a genuine cultural practice which elevates elegance to a way of life as much as an identity-affirming act, which the choreographer stages with five Swankas and four dancers and actors from her former productions.
