After Italy, Great Britain and Greece, we have decided to dedicate the new European Stage-Works to Portuguese artists so as to show the importance of their creative actions in every field; their achievements have been hidden by the almost exclusive economic look that has been taken at the country for the last few years.

Indeed if Portugal is violently hit by the economic crisis, to an extent that may seem unbelievable to us today, the resistance of artists gives birth to a great variety of productions, “a testing  ground” for emerging companies, which really analyze the social and political impact of their productions, a stage whose strength is its independence.

Our European Stage-Works Portugal are based on these movements of today’s  productions which gather artists from every field (theatre, dance, cinema, music and visual arts): we tried to picture, although it wa s impossible to be exhaustive, the production of the younger Lisbon creators in 2013, to imagine a time dedicated to meeting new artists and discovering unusual careers. A time which is prepared all along the year, develops little by little, following a form of “navigation”, with no particular schedule, according to the necessities of urgency. The European Stage-Works could not exist without the indispensable support of our partners, and this year we especially wish to thank the City of Lisbon and the Egeac as well as the Gulbenkian Foundation, the Camões Institute, the City of Paris and the French Institute for their support, advice and participation in the organization of this event. We also thank Tiago Bartolomeo Costa, an active guide in the elaboration of the programme.

For a fortnight, and even a little more, we will thus have the chance to discover about sixty Portuguese artists of every field who will perform in all the spaces of the Théâtre de la Ville, some of which will especially be transformed, and in the institutions which are partners of the festival: the Centquatre, but also the Théâtre Monfort, the Maison de la poésie, the Palais de Tokyo…

For former European Stage-Works we had been able to invite, for the first time in France, companies such as 1927 (Great Britain 2011), the Blitz Theater group (Greece 2012) and many others; likewise, this year, we will discover artists, companies and collectives, which will, for a few weeks, turn Paris into another Portuguese capital. Lisbon, welcome to Paris.

PARIS TOWN COUNCIL - LISBON TOWN COUNCIL
LISBON - PARIS : 15 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP

Both capitals celebrate this year their 15 years of friendship with numerous cultural events.

On May 9 and 10, Lisbon is to be the guest of honour of the European village established on the Paris Hôtel de Ville square, within the “Build Europe” event.

On the agenda: a concert, a food and cooking stall with Lisbon specialities, and a series of happenings about Portugal’s capital.

As part of the celebration of the 15-year friendship between the two cities, a poster competition will be organized involving two art colleges, the Paris EPSAA (École professionnelle d’Arts Plastiques et d’Architecture [Professional School of Visual Arts and Architecture ]) and a Lisbon college, along the lines of the competition held during the 2012 Paris-Berlin Tandem.

In each capital, a jury will select the best posters which will subsequently be exhibited at the Théâtre de la Ville

As the redevelopment of the Banks of the Seine is being completed, Paris will host the exhibition Lisbon by the Tagus, organized by the Lisbon Photographic Archive Department. Bringing together images of the past and the present, the exhibition offers a unique and historical testimony about the age-old relationship between the Portuguese capital and its river.
