The kora is a twenty-one string lute-harp. It is the the Mandinka’s griot’s emblematic instrument. Having been initiated by his father from his early days, Ballaké Sissoko has become through the years one of the masters of this instrument. Sissoko is rooted in his tradition but also open to new adventures which feed his creative verve. He is both a representative of ancestral traditions and an innovator. On the stage of the Théâtre de la Ville, Ballaké Sissoko will be in the company of Adama Coulibaly with his kamele n’goni, a kind of kora. He is a minstrel of the hunters’ repertoire and distinguishes himself by a dynamic fingering technique and a powerful voice. Both artists will be backed by Mamadou Kamissoko with his n’goni, a seven-string lute, Demba Camara with his bolon, a five-string calabash, and Makan Sissoko on percussions. Patrick Labesse |
La kora et la grâce frissonnante de ses cordes entre les mains d’un enchanteur musicien relisant la tradition avec pertinence et invention. De dépouillement apaisé en accélérations espiègles, Ballaké Sissoko donne à l’instrument-roi de la musique mandingue des élans de liberté absolue. S’il perpétue l’héritage des anciens, dont celui de son père, feu Djelimady Sissoko, fondateur du légendaire Ensemble instrumental du Mali, c’est à travers de fulgurantes inventions que ses doigts cisèlent les mélodies. Après une création la saison dernière avec l’ensemble mauritanien Diddal Jaalal, Ballaké Sissoko se présente au Théâtre de la Ville accompagné de ses habituels compagnons de musique maliens.
