Syriac liturgical songs Coming down the ages, the concise and sober religious songs in Syriac – the language used by Oriental Christians from the 3rd to the 13th century – make up a unique cultural legacy inherited from the Christian Orient. This hieratic and minimalist chant sung a cappella is a kind of "haiku" with a religious purpose. It has no equivalent and literally charms the listeners, carrying them away in a sort of sacred trance. Ghada Shbeir comes from the Lebanon and is a master of this art. She teaches it at the university and travels over the world to share it with her audiences. Her seraphic voice scintillates with such purity that one falls immediately under its spell. Such is the magic of the human voice, that instrument able to foster every conceivable prodigy, to trigger off every conceivable emotion: "It all hinges on the sounds rising from the heart to the lips", as an Arab poet puts it. Chants syriaques. Echos du passé, les chants en langue syriaque, la langue chrétienne du IIIe au XIIIe siècle, concis et sobres, constituent un patrimoine unique hérité de l’Orient chrétien. C’est un chant hiératique et minimaliste, un genre de « haïku » à vocation religieuse, interprété a cappella. A nul autre pareil, il envoûte l’auditeur et l’emporte dans une sorte d’extase sacrée. Ghada Shbeir est libanaise. Elle maîtrise parfaitement l’art de ce chant. Elle l’enseigne à l’université et le partage en parcourant le monde. Sa voix séraphique brille d’une infinie pureté. Elle séduit d’emblée. Magie de la voix humaine, instrument capable de fomenter tous les prodiges et de manigancer toutes les émotions : « tout dépend des sons qui montent du coeur aux lèvres » écrit un poète arabe. Au fil de la quarantaine de pièces qui tissent le récital, Ghada Shbeir ravit celui qui croit au ciel comme celui qui n’y croit pas. Une tradition méconnue à découvrir. Jacques Erwan |
