Rabindranath Tagore a été à l’initiative de la résurrection de l’esraj, étonnante vièle à archet munie d’un manche de sitar. Dans l’esprit du musicien poète, cet instrument de la confidence se révélait idéal pour accompagner les poèmes qu’il mettait en musique. Le jeune Shubhayu Sen Majumdar a rallongé le manche de son instrument fétiche pour accroître sa sonorité et lui conférer une « fière allure ». Soliste et accompagnateur, il appartient à la grande école stylistique de Vishnupur, fondée par Bahadur Khan, descendant de l’illustre Tan Sen, chanteur préféré de l’empereur Akbar. Son jeu caressant qui porte à une atmosphère propice au rêve et à la méditation en fait le joueur d’esraj le plus demandé de tout le Bengal, seul état où l’esraj est encore joué. First performance in Europe Rabindranath Tagore has initiated the rebirth of the esraj, an astonishing bowed fiddle with a sitar-like neck. To the poet and musician this instrument meant for intimacy proved ideal to accompany the poems he set to music. The young musician Shubhayu Sen Majumdar has lengthened his favoured instrument's neck to enhance its sonority and give it a ‘fine figure’. Solo artist and accompanist, he belongs to the great stylistic school of Vishnupur, founded by Bahadur Khan, a descendant of Tan Sen, Emperor Akbar's illustrious favourite singer. His caressing technique creates an atmosphere leading to dream and meditation, and makes him the most sought after esraj player in all of Bengal, the only state where the esraj is still heard today.
