The p’i-p’a is a four-stringed lute invented in India, brought into China through Central Asia and spread over all Eastern Asia. It now has its place on American and European stages. Wu Man is the recognized heiress to a repertoire continuously elaborated and passed on from 1790 till today. She has confronted it with the sounds of the piano and of the string quartet, of electronic music, of the Blues, of percussion instruments and of the voice, far away from the pleasure boats, the tea houses and the people’s culture palaces where it used to flourish. She and her instrument both remain deeply oriental, scrupulously creating a correspondence between calligraphy and motion, poetry and sound, of which "Ancient Dances", a piece written with Chen Yi and accompanied by percussionist Robert Shulz, is to this day the best example. Luth à quatre cordes, inventé en Inde, introduit en Chine par l’Asie centrale, et transmis dans toute l’Asie orientale, le pipa a désormais sa place sur les scènes américaines et européennes. Héritière reconnue d’un répertoire élaboré et transmis sans interruption de 1790 à nos jours, Wu Man l’a confronté aux sons du piano et du quatuor à cordes, de l’électronique et du blues, des percussions et des voix, loin des bateaux de plaisir, des maisons de thé et des palais de la culture du peuple où il a fleuri. Lui et elle demeurent profondément orientaux, attentifs aux correspondances entre calligraphie et geste, poésie et son, tel « Ancient Dances », cosigné avec Chen Yi, qu’elle jouera avec Robert Schulz, donne à ce jour le meilleur exemple.
