Zakir Hussain le magicien a révolutionné l’art du tabla, popularisant aux quatre coins du monde un instrument jadis restreint à un rôle d’accompagnement. Ses solos sont toujours un événement attendu par son public et une découverte quasi hallucinante pour les nouveaux venus qui ne peuvent imaginer la variété des sons et des déploiements rythmiques ahurissants qu’il leur livre. Sa curiosité toujours en éveil, son intelligence et sa générosité font qu’il aime s’entourer d’amis musiciens de tous âges et de tous les continents, de John McLaughlin à Yoyo Ma. Au Théâtre de la Ville sont conviés les danseurs tambourinaires du Manipur, une délectable rareté qui nous entraîne vers l’Asie. Le 19 juin, dans une rencontre Nord-Sud, Zakir est en compagnie des deux plus brillants violonistes de la tradition carnatique du Sud, les frères Ganesh et Kumaresh, déjà invités en 2002. Le 24 juin est consacré à la musique hindoustanie du Nord, avec le prodige du sitar Niladri Kumar, qui est devenu son vieux complice et s’est déjà produit ici. Magician Zakir Hussain has transformed the art of the tabla and made it popular throughout the world, despite its having been confined to a mere accompanying role in the past. His faithful audiences always look forward to enjoying his solos, and newcomers, who have not expected such a variety of sounds and such astounding displays of rhythm, discover an almost incredible experience. Because of his constant and eager curiosity, his intelligence and generosity, he likes to surround himself with musician friends of all ages and all origins, from John McLaughlin to Yoyo Ma. Drum dancers from Manipur have been invited to the Théâtre de la Ville for a rare and delectable performance that will take us away towards Asia. On June 19th, in a North meets South encounter, Zakir will be in company with two of the most outstanding violinists from the South Indian Carnatic tradition, brothers Ganesh and Kumaresh, who had already been invited in 2002. June 24th will be dedicated to North Indian Hindustani music with sitar prodigy Niladri Kumar, who has become an old accomplice of Hussain's and has already performed here.
