Played by Fabio Bondi, Boccherini is immersed in the epic and in dreams. In romanticism in fact. What we hear is the intense expression of a self-evident tragic sphere that transcends reality; this is cast in an amazingly free use of structure and form, where the mobility of feelings dominates without any hint of Viennese mannerism. There is first a joyful lyrical trio from Boccherini’s early years in Madrid; this is followed by an absolutely charming quartet composed during his lonely stay in Las Arenas; and then two quintets dating from the mature years bring out Boccherini’s subtle handling of harmony and texture. Such a set of rarely assembled pieces encompasses all the aspects of one of the masters of chamber music in the Enlightenment along with Haydn and Mozart, and provides a bewitching programme.
