Akram Khan Choreographer
Akram Khan Company Company

Vertical Road  creation

With a group of exceptional dancers he met across the world, Akram Khan blazes the trail of a spiritual quest. As if he was treading the elusive path of the angels…

Akram Khan never stops moving boundaries, as if he wished to alter his route and find unchartered territories to renew his creative inspiration. A British dancer and choreographer of Bangladeshi origin, he meshes the tradition of kathak – the Indian classical style he learnt as a child – and the abstract lines of a choreographic grammar as clear-cut as it is deliberate. His virtuoso movements stunningly transcend the austerity of the time honoured codes and carve out of the body's energy a dance form whose elegance is never marred by mannerism. After having worked with Sylvie Guillem, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Juiette Binoche, Akram Khan organizes yet another singular encounter; for Vertical Road, he has gathered a group of exceptional dancers from Asia, Europe and the Middle-East. Against the current frantic taste for speed, when people keep running so as to turn their backs to meaningful ventures while suppressing things human, Khan sets off on the trail of a spiritual quest, on the elusive paths of the angels, far away from the hustle and bustle of our modern times. Khan looks ahead, towards a space shimmering with the shadow of a serenity to be conquered.
