The Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon continues with its fruitful companionship with choreographer William Forsythe, and includes in its répertoire Quintett (1993) and Workwithinwork (1998), two essential pieces to grasp the immense talent of the American dancer who settled in Europe almost forty years ago. Quintett is structured by falling movements and the restraining of bodies trying to meet each other. Gavin Bryars' score, Jesus’ blood never failed me yet, a variation on the heart-rending voice of a homeless man, enshrines the piece beautifully. Although it was composed in a period of mourning, Quintett is still a hymn to life. Workwithinwork is in a way its opposite. is a swift, virtuoso piece, where solos, duos and trios of all kinds create the pulse of a never ending movement. Accompanied by Luciano Berio's Duetti per due violini, Workwithinwork avoids the perils of a classical heritage and re-reates its movements on the stage. The Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon proves to be one of the best ambassadors of the Forsythe grammar.
