A CHOREOGRAPHIC INSTALLATION FOR 26 DANCERS

There is a definition of the "neutral " by Roland Barthes: it is a statue-like body is driven into an endless circle. A moment of peace.

A year after 50 Years of Dance, a piece which started from a book of photos by Merce Cunningham and ended up a flip book where dancers take charge of the passages and mobile intervals created by the sequence of the photographs, Boris Charmatz embarks on a paradoxical project with Levée des conflits [Lifting the conflicts]. It is a motionless choreography presented as a sculpture, with no beginning and no end, performed again and again in a stretching time-span and based on a single movement whose parts are all seen simultaneously. "It is a trou de danse, a dance hole, which irresistibly reminds me of this subjective definition of ' the neutral according to Roland Barthes': the neutral as a yearning for the end of conflicts », says the choreographer. An initial movement goes around in a circle and spreads, danced in canon by thirty dancers or so. While the bodies take turns – as in a photo by Muybridge which breaks up movement - in a choreographic structure revolving endlessly, the overall shape remains completely stable. Our eyes see but watching breaks up the motions as it takes them in.
