BODIES ON STRIKE
Associate Artist at the 2011Avignon Festival, Boris Charmatz created for the Cour d’Honneur of the Palais des Papes a piece which resumes the research initiated with régi [produced] (2006) on choreographing machines. With enfant, he gives a new start to the project of a choreography for impassive bodies.
“child”, summons a mouldable material, both fragile and uncontrollable, a load of reality upsetting the balance of the stage. Carried up, laid down, manipulated by dancers, the children’s bodies swarm over the space, make it bigger, sculpt it. Their relationships generate a system of tension and unloosening, combining inertia and a transformation process. Progressively, the relationships are reversed, the frontier between grown-ups and children, professionals and amateurs, animate and inanimate bodies unravels, giving way to an evolving mass, an impetuous horde sweeping everything in its path: an invasion or recreation – giving back to children their place as aesthetic and political unknown factor in the equation of stage performance.
