HUMAN MYSTERIES
A magician with pictures, Guy Cassiers gives words an essential place So as to probe the paths of the world’s self destruction and disintegration.

One remembers the first time Guy Cassiers came to the Théâtre de la Ville with the Toneelhuis Theatre from Anvers. How could one forget his Triptyque du pouvoir [Triptych of power], which, in a maelstrom of beautifully disjointed video pictures, locked in tyrants from our days and from mythology, made them stumble and disappear. In 2009, the atmosphere changed, but always with a background of more or less fantastical pictures for his Under the Volcano, an adaptation of Malcolm Lowry’s novel, soaking alcohol and mescal, with the Spanish Civil War in the background. Now, in the same vein, Cassiers presents the adaptation of another novel, by Joseph Conrad this time: Dark Heart. It is like going back in time: these are the times of the colonies (the book was published in 1902). The story takes place in the former Belgian Congo, where a man who has become a tyrant, has built his own hell. He dies from so much horror, right in front of the friend who has come to get him and who, terrified by what he has seen and as if he wanted to preserve something human, hides the truth from the widow.
