An aggressive and direct tone; a way of lassoing the toughest and most uncomfortable issues in society; a high flying treatment, mixing action dance, theatre, video and music with an acute sense of addressing the public: .all of that has a name, that of choreographer and director Lloyd Newson. Five years after To Be Straight With You (2007) which dealt with homophobia and religion with a magnificent aggressiveness, the leader of the British company DV8 since 1986 starts a new battle with Can We Talk About This? The heart of the target is freedom of speech, censorship concerning a few major events, like the death fatwa issued in 1989 against the writer Salman Rushdie. There are eleven actor-dancers on stage to charge in and carry high this red-hot piece signed by an ever angry man. Based on interviews with writers and politicians, and on archived images, this new opus reminds one that some things are not better left unsaid. Newson surely knows about that.
