A tribute to Dahmane El Harrachi, his memory remains.
On August 31st 1980 Dhamane El Harrachi died in a car accident. He was the emblematic figure of the chaabi, a music born in the casbah of Algiers, during the 1940s. A virtuoso of the mandola, his son,
also an author-composer-musician, follows the family tradition. On the thirtieth anniversary of the death of his father, he pays him tribute during an exceptional concert, surrounded by fifteen musicians and singers: "He sang his art, he left his mark", claims Kamel in 'Ghana fenou'. He reinterprets the tunes of his childhood in his own way, he adds his personal touch and his own creations. Today as yesterday, chaabi music has a social component. It evokes people's life, love, exile… "O you expatriate, you keep running in other people's lands", sang Dahmane in 'ya rayah'. Then it was sung by Rachid Taha, and today by Kamel.
