LA NOCE/ANTON TCHEKHOV
in bielorussian and in russian, french subtitles

Pretence
A wedding party in the Russian tradition, unrestrained and wild, becoming increasingly chaotic, but ending the same way it started; with songs.

A middle-class wedding party, but in the Russian tradition. One might as well say that it is an unrestrained party, where anything can happen. And everything does happen. These middle-class people would be happy to free themselves from a world where everything slips through their fingers. Should one be more  specific? The play is more about appearances than about being truly seen. It is much more about money (real or not) than about love. Everything is for sale, or at least for rent, like this General standing guarantor for the family. These unscrupulous people are ridiculous of course, but in the end we almost find them likeable, at least through Vladimir Pankov’s production with music, dances, songs and lyrics. A composition made out of chaos and mastery, with surges of variety shows, folklore, Stravinski, tradition and fun. The musicians themselves are guests of the party in a huge and cluttered space where hopes and insignificant dreams, deceit for some and naivety for all, come colliding together, for our own delight.
