The Winter's Tale

SUSPICION
Rather than face doubt, a man will prefer to bear the unbearable. Nothing can appease him, except the code of the tale: a happy ending.

We have two princes, life-long friends. One of them is married, the other pays him a visit. We will see how a totally groundless suspicion turns into a neurosis, ultimately destroying at once friendship and wedlock. while spreading to every person attending.
Jealousy is not just to be found in Othello. In The Winter's Tale, however, one of his last plays, Shakespeare seems to be pacified, or rather, almost pacified. To say the least the land of doubt and fear where he places his characters are of a steep and craggy kind. Everything will end in reconciliation, it is true; still the wounds will remain sore. All the more so as Lilo Baur uses Bernard-Marie Koltès's translation which is not seeped in bathos…
Lilo Baur is not afraid of jostling traditional frontiers. In the spirit of her previous production – Fish love for instance, shown at the Théâtre des Abbesses in 2008 – she focuses on the errings of passion and on monomaniac ideas leading to madness. She explores their depths, thanks to the improvisation work of her actors who come from a variety of countries.
