BIRDS WITH CHAOS

Ashes rained down onto the stage of the Théâtre de la Ville in January 2010. The person responsible for this phenomenon was Lemi Ponifasio, the Samoan choreographer today based in New Zealand, who has been directing since 1995 the MAU company (MAU means testimony or declaration). With Tempest: without a body, a piece for 11 survivors, he signed an anti-establishment manifesto about the end of the world. His new production, Birds With Skymirrors, is inspired from the choreographer’s memory. A few years ago, as he was walking along a beach in the Pacific, he saw birds that seemed to be carrying bits of mirrors in their beaks. They were tapes from video-cassettes destined to build their nests. This detail nourished a wider reflection on ecology and world chaos. Beyond his commitment, Lemi Ponifasio meshes the great myths of the Pacific (the ceremonies, gods, animals and poetry) with acute contemporary aesthetics. Here activism mixes art and society in the same movement...
