David Lescot Author, composer, director

L'Européenne  Creation, Production Théatre de la Ville

This is a bunch of people from all countries of the European Community, gathered in the hope of setting up some sort of cultural project based on features common to our old Continent. It is going to be a Herculean task, since the European Community is composed of 27 countries where 23 languages are spoken – not counting regional dialects. Therefore, as each interpreter can only translate into one language at a time, there would have to be at least 23 times 23 interpreters. David Lescot was brought up without any form of religion or dogma, but in an environment of critical minds; he cannot do without humour, especially in his vision of the world, in his conception of life, humanity and therefore Europe, to which he feels strongly attached. Besides, he sincerely dreams of a specific and singular culture, which would take the differences into account. As regards a common language, it is a different story. He would rather bank on music. In the first place, he is a musician; then, even without being one, everybody can follow and remember a song, although they may not understand the lyrics. There are many songs in this show, all kinds of tunes, since one purpose of the gathering is to compose a new anthem which is supposed to unite all Europeans – the old ones, the newcomers and the future members - in place of the “Ode to Joy”, composed long ago by Beethoven. All this winds up in a show, a sort of crazy revue, which captures the hopes and their excesses with staggering lucidity. David Lescot does not make fun of the European Community. He points out the absurdities, while emanating a sense of generosity that we would love to find among politicians...
