“Our simplest movement towards new paths, towards our dreams, takes us one step nearer to fulfilment.” Those words by sociologist Jailson Silva Lia Rodrigues likes to claim them as her own credo. The Stuff we are Made of, a production which made her popular in France, was bringing together on stage performers and audience. The dancing was associated with slogans expressing our need for tenderness and peace. Incarnat in 2005 addressed our feelings when facing other people’s sufferings. Her former works are true manifestoes against personal withdrawal and disembodiment. Lia Rodrigues is definitely an artiste engagée, so much so that she draws no line between her artistic achievements and her commitment in one of Rio de Janeiro’s most destitute favelas, where she transformed a warehouse into a dance studio. This sense of belonging is at the core of the “poetic project” in her next production. Between a common line of movement and strikingly expressive solos, tender motions and scenes of struggle, the bodies emanate the echoes of reality and claim the veracity of a Dasein which softly imparts the possibility of another better world.
