VERTICAL LUMINOSITY
A MAJOR PIECE FROM LUCINDA CHILDS THAT SHE’S REWORKED MORE THAN 30 YEARS AFTER ITS CREATION. PERFORMED OVER TWO LEVELS OF A STRUCTURE DESIGNED BY FRANK GEHRY.

Lucinda Childs continues her return to basics. After Dance, created in 1979 and presented in autumn 2014, the great postmodern American choreographer has plunged herself into the reconstruction of AVAILABLE LIGHT another minimalist piece that marks a point in her career and prolongs the spirit of collaboration that began 20 years ago with Judson Dance Theatre. John Adams has provided his symphonic score, and architect Frank Gehry  has created a constructivist scene over two levels that multiplies the possibilities of composition. In 1983, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles offered this unusual team a space midway between the warehouse and the theatre, where outside light could penetrate through. The luminous simplicity of the choreography echoes, carried by the dialogue born from the vertical superposition of the dancers, counterpointed by pure repetition.
