Merce Cunningham Choregrapher
Merce Cunningham Dance Company Company

Nearly 90²  Creation
With the Festival d'Automne in Paris

NEARLY 90²
It is with great sadness that we learned the news of Merce Cunningham's passing on July 27, 2009. Together with Festival d'Automne we had planned to celebrate the 90th birthday of this incomparable creator with the presentation of Nearly Ninety 2, and of the works of Boris Charmatz and Jérôme Bel. This tribute has turned in to a farewell.

For his ninetieth birthday, Cunningham has treated himself to a king-sized creation; Nearly 90² displays thirteen dancers in a “space for spaces”.
This outstanding production will be followed by other programmes at the Théâtre de la Ville, with the Festival d’Automne, during the next two seasons. There will be a retrospective of some key moments of Cunningham’s “repertoire” and a revival of his formidable Ocean, the last upshot of his priceless complicity with John Cage; about the latter piece, it would be impossible to summarize in a few words all that it bequeathed and transmitted to younger generations, to enable modern ballet to find new paths to freedom, to the liberation of movement, which should be “expressive in itself”. In Ocean originated the whole development of the contemporary ballet in France and in Europe as of the end of the 70’s. This inheritance, received with the greatest degree of liberty towards the “master”, lives on in younger artists considered as representatives of a “new generation”.
