Our Need for Consolation  creation

Until one’s dying day, science takes care of everything. Julie Bérès finds it both worrying and amusing, and the documentary excavations she carries out become a source of dream-like drama.

In Julie Bérès’ theatre, the text is a material among others. “I do my best to give theatre a sensorial and suggestive form. I try to find a link between polysemic elements, I throw in sounds, images, bodies and situations. What I want to do is to elaborate a composition in which the imagination and the suggestions made by the actors can interact with the emotions triggered off by the sound inventions, the scenographic finds and the distortions allowed by the video and lighting.”
In Our Need for Consolation, Julie Bérès delves into the ethical questions raised by scientific progress whenever it concerns the living. Biogenetics, cloning, processes to slow down cell ageing, DNA manipulations, the freezing of bodies after death… all of this is used to outline the landscape of a post-human world, where dreams of immortality could become real. Through a “documentary immersion” into the heart of these networks (a sperm bank in Denmark, surrogate mothers in India and so on…), Julie Bérès manages to get images, situations, fragments  of texts and optical illusions, so that we confuse the real with the unreal. We are faced with a dream-like theatre, both burlesque and nightmarish, meant to awaken our awareness.
