A loyal visitor to the Théâtre de la Ville, the Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon [The Lyons Opera Ballet] is absolutely outstanding in its contemporary American repertoire. In this New York programme Beach Birds by Merce Cunningham (1991) is a recent addition to the The Lyons Opera Ballet’s repertoire. It reminds us that beyond abstraction, the American choreographer also feeds on a superb sensitivity to the forces of the universe. Moreover, the piece illustrates the then seventy-year-old youngster’s debut in the era of computer choreography. As to Trisha Brown, she only rarely entrusts anyone with her piece Set and Reset (1983), more precisely with the sets of indications guiding the improvisations that turn every performance into a new version. The music of this fine piece is by Laurie Anderson, its visual universe by Bob Rauschenberg. The programme also includes a newcomer, Ralph Lemon, an African-American choreographer, also a visual artist and writer, concerned with questions of Black identity world wide Two masterpieces. One creation.
