THE AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCE

A lawn, a stuffed deer, a playground for unfettered dancers... As the Tanztheater Wuppertal, for the 2012 London Olympics, is about to re-produce ten international pieces by Pina Bausch created between Viktor (1986) and “…como el musguito en la piedra, ay si, si, si…” (2009), the Théâtre de la Ville offers another choice rerun with 1980, Ein Stück von Pina Bausch, a pivotal piece which followed the sudden death of Rolf Borzik, Pina’s scenographer and partner. Radically dismissing more or less narrative concerns, the choreographer sets free all the potential of a “bits and pieces theatre”, where childhood memories, social rituals, the discrepancy between the authenticity of emotions and the conventions polishing up their expression, make up the extraordinary kaleidoscopic cabaret of human behaviour. At the time when it was created, Heiner Müller had discerned its scope better than anyone: “Only the growing necessity of authentic experience develops the ability to look history in the eye, go beyond politics and maybe invent a new form of humanity.”
