Polyeucte  rerun

A splendid tragedy with radical staging

The piece takes place in Armenia at the beginning of Christianity. Barely baptised, Polyeucte has been happily married for a short time, runs to the temple to smash the pagan idols in order to make the one and only God triumphant in his eyes! He now has only one desire – to renounce his love of his wife and die a martyr. The destruction of statues and antique temples perpetrated today in the name of religion and the desire for death of young converted people offer an amazing similarity with the acts and the destiny of Polyeucte. This leads our team to question the work of admirable complexity and ambivalence, and to think about this thought of Nietzsche – “martyrs have been a great misfortune in history: they seduced…”.

Brigitte Jaques-Wajeman received The 2016 SACD Award for Best Director for Polyeucte.
