He embodies twentieth-century India, between classic heritage and modern innovations. Rahul Sharma honors the work of his father, Shiv Kumar, and pushes his instrument, the santoor, to its limits.
Born in the mountains of Kashmir, following a series musical encounters at the top, Rahul Sharma makes light of the high altitudes of artistic creation. Son and student of the great Indian santoor master Shiv Kumar Sharma, he has been immersed in the ocean of the ragas since his early childhood. Fundamentally modern and inspired by Kashmiri traditional melodies, he has decided to revive his family's innovative tradition * and to set off in search of new musical forms. The result? An tremendous mastery of his instrument and of the classic repertoire, combined to a fresh influence coming directly from the rich Himalayan valleys, the whole experience being ornamented with new, unforeseen horizons of a rare intensity. It is yet another "Sharma" who comes back to the Théâtre de la Ville after two years of absence.

* His grandfather, Uma Dutt Sharma, was the first to introduce the santoor in the body of Indian learned music.
