Robyn Orlin Choreographer
City Theatre and Dance Group Company

« Walking next to our shoes… intoxicated by strawberries and cream, we enter continents without knocking… » (2009)

with the Festival d'Automne à Paris

Dressed like lords and holding their shoes in their hands as if they were a precious thing, the members of the Phuphuma Love Minus choir walk in procession on the stage, which is empty, except for a long roll of white paper on which video images of Johannesburg are projected,. They perform an a capella singing while taking dance steps on the tips of their toes and stamping about on the stage, which is how “isicathamiya” choir translates (to walk softly), an urban art in the real sense of the word, born at the beginning of the 20th century when the Zulu communities started to emigrate to the cities. Robyn Orlin puts it at the heart of her latest creation and, to the songs about everyday life, she adds the colourful performance of two swankers and an opera singer, agents of disruption with their high, resonant voice. The roll of paper, a medium for the images, is also transformed into dresses and headdresses as the wild swankers roll it up, and ends up sweeping through the auditorium, like a long wave of rippling paper on which rolling waves from the Indian Ocean appear.
