THE STING OF REBELLIOUS HUMOUR

With her well-structured and a resolutely activist posture, Robyn Orlin tackles the lingering ailments  which besiege society. Sharpened by her acute rebellious humour which discards the  conventions’ calls to order, her creations jostles choreographic propriety  following Orlin’s revolts, her fits of anger and her fantasy. The South African artist, who lived under the yoke of apartheid lavishly  displays a collage of the stubborn prejudices  sealed to the unquestioning unconscious minds. By combining her roots and modernity, learned and popular cultures, she probes her country’s contrasts and the issue of identities shaken by the mirage of globalization.
…have you hugged, kissed and respected your brown Venus today?  evokes the story of Saartjie Baartman, an African woman exhibited as an ethnological specimen throughout the 19th-century  Western world. Orlyn explores the obstacles to the recognition and respect of the foreign other. Represented by five actresses –singers, that black Venus oscillates between documentary images and bodily presence . She thus hammers into the core of our times the complexity  of domination relationships, the tension between Africa and Europe.
