A former child prodigy, thirty-two year-old Shashank already has a long and unique career behind him. His incredible sound and his improvisations make him the most astonishing flautist in Southern India.
When he was ten, Shashank appeared suddenly like a shooting star, shortly after the death of the legendary T. R. Mahalingam, best known as Mali, a genius of the murali flute. Noticing his phenomenal gift, his father (a flautist) introduced him to the flute at the early age of four. Yet, Mahalingam saw for the young boy "a glorious future in a world where music is hardly practiced to soothe the heart and to quench the spirit any more"; he ordered Shashank's father not only to refrain from playing, but also to lead his son towards gurus chosen among singers, not flautists. Since that time, Shashank has not stopped evolving and innovating. He varies his tones while developing a technique adapted to nine flutes of different sizes… Unique in that regard, he goes even further, incorporating in his repertoire the Hindustani music he has been studying with the great singer Pandit Jasraj. His art is close to magic.
