Incandescent fusion
The frevo is a type of carnival music from north-east Brazil. A hundred years old but still high-spirited, it livens up the streets. Rich with complex playing techniques, sophisticated and original, it deserves to be brought to the stage. Under the direction of "Spok", a master of the genre, the SpokFrevo Orquestra accomplishes this mission. It is a big band. It allies two traditions, frevo and jazz. The frevo embraces the aesthetics of jazz, and this mixing gives birth to a frevo with a jazzy accent, a jazz with a Brazilian accent, frevo jazz, an incandescent fusion, if one can risk the pleonasm. The orchestra plays a raw frevo, as expected, but the arrangements make all the difference: they leave room for improvisation. The repertoire mixes classics of the genre and recent compositions: street frevos by Levino Ferreira, works by Dominguinhos and Sivuca, accordion virtuosos, by Duda or Dorival
Caymmi Jewels which the SpokFrevo Orquestra offers festival after festival, from South Africa to Finland, via France.
