THE NAKED MAN With the magic of his imagery Romeo Castellucci never ceases to focus on human faces and bodies in all their variety.
Under the face of the son of God, in a supremely elegant living room, a speechless old man with a shabby body, spits out his revolt, his pain, his disgust; he excretes all that burdens him as if to free himself from the regulated world that surrounds him, in which he belongs and in which he feels a prisoner. Beside him his son, the image of what he once was but will not and cannot any longer be, follows him and takes care of him in an attempt to bring him back to social propriety. And then night falls, as dark as anxiety: an irreversible nothingness, where, in utter silence and powerlessness the face of the son of God slowly disintegrates. Romeo Castellucci’s productions combine random performance and lyrical expression, the simplest use of trestle theatre and the refinement of utterly sophisticated techniques: they belong to no category but they always focus on the human condition, the human beings and their pulses. Castelluci’s art focuses on the human body in its beauty as well as in its infirmities, a body that conveys its social identity and a face that expresses what cannot be said.
