Yasuko Yokoshi project

Tyler Tyler  French première

Americans trained to postmodern dance and Japanese from the Kabuki Su-odori tradition : clash  and harmony between two cultures.

Yasuko Yokoshi is a name to remember in this new season. A dancer and a choreographer. she was born in Hiroshima, has been living in New York since 1981. She excels in the subtle art of intermixing cultures. Thus in what we when we, she adapted a short story by Raymond Carver into a choreographic tale in the Kabuki Su-odori dance style. In Tyler Tyler this time, she embarks on a new experience in which “an artistic form is passed on to another world.” She brings together American dancers familiar with postmodern dance and Japanese actors taught in Kabuki Su-odori by Masumi Seyama VI (Kabuki Su-odori is the ancestral form of a codified genre combining drama, motion and singing.) From contemporary movements on the floor to the handling of a venerable fan, from an utterly modern balance on one foot to motions of the kneeling body reminding us of an ancient ritual, one beholds the range of possibilities Yasuko Yokoshi means to develop in Tyler Tyler. It is a bridge between distant places brought together by which dance on music pieces by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Steven Reker in a meeting which is all the more delectable as it is unexpected.
