In Pakistan, music is played and listened to everywhere: on the streets, in transport and at home. You are invited to come and discover it by the Theatre de la Ville, which for years has been furrowing the roads and steep tracks of a country which saw the birth of legendary Nusrat Tateh Ali Khan, welcomed on our Parisian stage for his first visit to France in 1985. This is an opportunity to take a different look at things, beyond the clichés and the recurring dramatic news.
Several trips were necessary to elaborate this festive week-end where musicians and singers coming from different regions will be gathered, the final programme will be announced later. Two concerts have already been scheduled.
Subhan Ahmad Nizami created with his two brothers Bilal and Hilal his own qawwal band in 1999, when he was 18. Far from the temptations of Bollywood, he belongs to this young generation who chose to render the beauty of the Great Mystics’ texts which used to be confined to mausoleums and brotherhoods. Today, qawwali is sung everywhere, on any occasion, for weddings, religious celebrations or the commemoration of the Saints.
