After over a century of recreations, Afternoon of a Faun now has a Spanish incarnation. Barcelonian Pol Jiménez, trained in flamenco and traditional Spanish dance, channels the energy of bolero and the spirit of contemporary dance in this major addition to a rich cannon. Jiménez brings a new sensuality to that dream-like creature, half-human, half-animal, creating a hybrid Faun who finds his Nymph within. Escaping from his suspended chrysalis, Jiménez jumps and spins into an animalistic, Dionysian, carnivalesque frenzy. Like an ecstatic Nijinski, virtuosic and extraordinarily flexible, right down to his feet and calves, this satyr takes flight in unabashed and joyful celebration.

Alternately troubling and teasing, Tânia Carvalho has created a masterwork that reaches back to her roots. As if I could...traces the origins and essence of her singular aesthetic, now a touchstone in the world of dance. Here, the Portuguese choreographer, with her always refined and often surreal movements, takes us to murky depths, creating sensual, yet exquisitely elegant lines. This solo showcases the power of her art: her precise expressionism, her Kafka-inspired sketches, and the musicality of her choreography: Carvalho is also a composer, pianist and singer.
