Seven days, seven operas
China has several hundreds of theatre forms that are a testimony of different regional sensitivities. Northern operas (Han and Beijing) use string instruments and drums to carry emotions to extremes. More ancient, southern operas (kunqu and Wù) prefer wind instruments and express rather delicate feelings. “Civilian” plays resort to singing and plot. On the contrary, “military” plays are based on fights and acrobatics. All local operas fall within a formal style where singing, gestures, make-up and the typology of characters are strictly codified
