Jean de La Fontaine was born four centuries ago, on July 8, 1621 in Château-Thierry.
Drawing from the fabulists of Greco-Latin Antiquity and particularly Aesop, he wrote more than two hundred and forty fables. A moralist without being moralizing, La Fontaine tells stories about animals to depict the peculiarities of humans, casting a lucid glance at human nature and power relations. His artful style and humor and the texts’ ambitions – which are far more complex than imagined at first glance – determined the success of this singular body of work.
