Merce Cunningham
An exhilarating tribute to Merce Cunningham, followed by a return to the beginnings of John Cage’s career, in celebration of these two visionary artists’ eternal youth.
Merce Cunningham created "Sounddance" in New York in 1975, after a long period of working with the Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris. The work is a hymn to freedom, full of vital energy. Twelve years later, he choreographed "Fabrications", in which he used chance operations to determine the selection of sequences, as well as their path and length, among sixty-four danced phrases. Petter Jacobsson and Thomas Caley, long a dancer with the Merce Cunningham Company, have imagined a piece based on "Four Walls", an early work by Cunningham and Cage, who described it as a “dance-play,” a hybrid piece combining a spoken text (written by Merce), movement, and music. Performed only once in 1944, it was not preserved on film.
