A Masterful Organist

BACH Toccata and fugue, in D minor, BWV 565
Six Schübler Chorales, BWV 645-650
Toccata, Adagio and fugue, in C major, BWV 564
Canoniques Variations, BWV 769
Passacaglia and Fugue, in C minor, BWV 582

A regular guest of the Théâtre de la Ville, the brilliant harpsichordist and organist Benjamin Alard continues his discographic exploration of the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach, to whom he has already devoted four volumes for Harmonia Mundi. At the grand organ of the Saint-Louis Chapel of the Salpêtrière, he will brilliantly retrace nearly forty years of Bach's production: he will first perform an early piece, the famous Toccata and Fugue BWV 565, then the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue BWV 564 and the Passacaglia and Fugue BWV 582, written while Bach was titular organist at the Weimar Castle Chapel, the moving Six Schübler Chorales BWV 645-650 transcribed from cantatas for his former student, the publisher Johann Georg Schübler, and finally, the Canonic Variations BWV 769 on a Christmas Carol, a mature work composed during his last years in Leipzig.
