THREE DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERES, ALL ENTHRALLING, ONE AFTER THE OTHER IN THE SAME PROGRAM, AS IF THREE LIGHTS HAD BEEN BROUGHT TOGETHER TO LAY BARE OUR HUMANITY.

In 2009, Lucinda Childs created Songs from Before for the Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin, presenting a rare work of great intimacy. The inspiration came from the novelist Haruki Murakami and with the post-minimalist music of Max Richter, she expressed a melancholy lyricism only occasionally felt in her other works.
Bless-ainsi soit-IL is a compelling duo by Bruno Bouché based on the biblical tale of Jacob wrestling with the angel, providing the choreographer with a founding myth that then became a matter of spirituality taking physical form with great sensuality. The third work, Enemy in the Figure by William Forsythe was premièred by his Frankfurt Ballet in 1989; to this day it remains one of the most mysterious works of the great choreographer, and is now part of the repertoire of the Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin. In a jumble of huge objects and harsh rays of light rending the shadows, the dancers move forth in all their youth, standing up to threats approaching as they appear to embrace the space.
