JOIN IS A WORK ADDRESSING THE CONCEPT OF A COMMUNITY, REDEFINING IT THROUGH CONTACT AND SHARING IN A STUDY OF WHAT MAKES HUMANS COME TOGETHER.
As Ioannis Mandafounis observes, when human beings form bonds around community-identity concepts, dystopia is never far away. Standing in contrast with such a model that produces violence, he presents the idea of coming together through differences, as two groups of performers join up. There is a group of dancers from the company that is the living heritage of William Forsythe and where, for many years, Ioannis Mandafounis was a particularly inventive artist; and there is a younger group who have nearly completed their studies and are preparing to embark on their future as professional dancers. On stage they take over the space available, developing rich interactions. When joined together, their movements burst forth in a prolific and wildly virtuoso performance of creative exuberance. Before our very eyes we are witnessing the advent of a vibrant, extraordinarily lively force.
